Plastic Lumber Design Considerations
BOARD SPACING FRAMING
Plastic lumber will expand and contract approximately 1/4" per 8 foot board
feet over a wide range in tempurature, design should allow for this movement.
Because of this you you will not get fine finished joints like wood projects.
We recommend a pattern in the design for every 12' of decking.
When framing, the end of each decking board must be on a full joist.
Before installing plastic lumber on your wood frame, make sure the frame
is fully dried and not wet.
For southern exposure deck the recommended maximum length is 12'.
When installing in temperatures over 65 degrees, butt all ends as closely
as possible and space boards the width of a 12 or 16 penny nail.
If you need to notch a board around a post you must only use an "L" notch,
the board can be no longer than 4' and you must have at least a 1/4" gap at
the post.
